What does it mean to argue? Have you ever thought about the meaning of this word?

Let us try to define it and thus understand better how to write an argumentative research paper.

To argue means to present your own point of view:

An argumentative research paper is a piece of writing where you develop a certain theme. You will be given a topic for your argumentative research paper, or you will have an opportunity to pick it yourself. One way or another- you are to research this issue and present your own ideas on it, supporting your point of view with examples.

To argue means to have an opinion different from your opponent’s one:

Imagine that you are debating with your teacher on some issue- debating through your argumentative research paper. Would it not be pleasant to convince your opponent (especially, your lecturer) in your own opinion?! So, your argumentative research paper should involve strong support of the issue- persuading facts, reliable statistics, and supportive theories. Do not forget that the reward for this “debate round” is worth it!

To argue means to listen to your opponent:

Your argumentative research papers will not cover the topic unless you investigate both pros and cons of the issue. You should try to give reasons why you do not support the opposing point of view on the issue of your argumentative research paper.

To argue means to summarize your ideas in a convincing way

Your argumentative research paper should necessarily contain conclusion, where you are supposed to summarize your main points in a persuasive way.

Argumentative research papers writing will prepare you for two tasks – conducting research and being able to argue. If you learn how to do both of them, you will at least become a good debater.
